Physics Methodology

The coefficient of static friction (μs) is defined as the ratio of the force of friction to the normal force. On an inclined plane, when an object is just about to slide, the gravitational force component down the plane equals the maximum force of static friction.

μs = tan(θ)

Why mass doesn't matter: In the equation mg·sin(θ) = μs·mg·cos(θ), the mass (m) and gravitational acceleration (g) appear on both sides of the equation. They cancel each other out, proving that the incline angle required to cause sliding is independent of the object's mass.
